What is your experience with soprano saxophone?
I'm in Jr.High and I play alto sax, and have for 5 years now. High school is coming up, and I really want to switch to soprano.
The band teacher I had in grade school first introduced me to soprano, and I fell in love with the instrument. He said that high school was a good time for me to make the switch.
However, I have since moved and my current band teacher says that there is no place for a soprano sax in the band. I'm tiring of my alto and the band, and thinking of dropping in 9th grade to persue soprano... but I wan't some opinions on the experience, first.
What is your advice on when to start? As a soprano player, have you found it particularly difficult to find lessons, music, and gigs? Please share your experiences to help me out!
I play all the saxophones, and the soprano is the one I have played the least. While it is a fun instrument to play, there is not much band music for it. If band music has saxophones, it has alto, tenor and baritone in it, and rarely a soprano. Also, most people have massive intonation issues with the soprano, so teachers don't want them played since they will stick out if not played well.
As a soprano player, finding a lesson teacher isn't hard. Any saxophone teacher can teach soprano. Even if they don't own one, they can play a tenor at the same time without having to transpose. Music is able to be found (e.g. solo pieces) but again there isn't as much as say an alto. Gigs on a soprano are very rare. Most of the time you'll get a gig as an alto or tenor player and that's it. Unfortunately most people don't want a soprano player since people think of Kenny G immediately when thinking soprano. If you want to expand your knowledge, go to baritone or tenor (bari being the better choice). If you do happen to buy a soprano at some point, it will come in handy once and a while, but not as much. I've played in many jazz bands and have read well over 200 jazz pieces, and I've played soprano maybe 5 times.
Woodwind- Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon. The Flute has the highest pitch among the woodwind instruments. It's held sideways as well as the player blows across the hole to generate sound. The flute usualy plays the melody of a song. It uses the treble clef. The Oboe is shaped conically and is held vertically downwards. Players blow into the mouthpiece in the leading which is fitted a double reed. The oboe can sound the note A at concert pitch for orchestras to tune their instruments. The oboe uses the treble clef.
The Organ is an ancient style of piano which utilizes air power as opposed to striking a string like a normal piano would. When an organ player presses a key, it completes a circuit that releases air by way of a pipe, generating a sound. This gives it the capacity to sustain a note, something that a typical piano can't do.As opposed to a piano, which is created to lead an arrangement, organs are traditionally delegated as the body of a musical piece. It can give loads of depth to an arrangement as it can sustain a note indefinitely. Most of the time, its part would be to provide support to the rest of the piece.
