Would a dent show up after my alto sax got fixed?
Okay, so two days ago i accidentally dropped my alto saxophone. I just got it in September and it was in perfect condition. when i dropped it, the three keys on the bottom kind of on the bell and the keypad (with the g#, low Bb, low c#) got bent from one of the rods bending off of the keys. Also, there is a dent about 1 and 1/2 inches long on the bottom inside part. My band director brought it to the repair place and they said the bell twisted a little bit when it dented. They said it would cost $220 to fix. Do you think they will have to weld it to untwist the bell? it didn't seem twisted to me so i don't think it would be bad. Will there be any big visible marks? Will the lacquer come off??
Hey! I have a rather well knowledge base of this because I am a musician and worked in the retail side of music for many years.
It is VERY possible that the bell twisted and you could not see it. Many times to the untrained eye little nuances go unnoticed but create big problems. No welding should need to be done however, each tech has their own way of doing things. If the repair shop is good at what they do (which they should be since the director bothers with them) then your horn will come back looking as shiny as it did before you dropped her. If anything is out of whack such as lacquer being rubbed off, signs of a once twisted or dented bell, whatever...you need to take it back because it is there responsibility to fix it.
Only other word of advice...make sure she plays right! You know in your gut if it's right or not. It's easy to over analyze and think it's just you but if something feels off then it is. The pads are so very sensitive that even being one mml out of place can have a big impact on the ability to properly cover the hole. Hope this helps!!!
Woodwind- Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon. The Flute has the highest pitch amongst the woodwind instruments. It is actually held sideways as well as the player blows across the hole to produce sound. The flute usualy plays the melody of a song. It utilizes the treble clef. The Oboe is shaped conically and is held vertically downwards. Players blow into the mouthpiece in the leading which is fitted a double reed. The oboe can sound the note A at concert pitch for orchestras to tune their instruments. The oboe uses the treble clef.
You can find two forms of Clarinets- Clarinet in A (which produces a sound a minor 3rd lower than written) and Clarinet in B flat (produces a sound a significant 2nd lower than written). The Clarinet use the treble clef. The Bassoon has the lowest pitch amongst the woodwind family members. It uses a double reed like the Oboe. The bassoon uses the bass clef, and for the highest notes, the tenor clef is utilised.
